New skins for my new set any help?

motox132 - Tue, 07/08/2008 - 03:28 | 3,452 views

I bought a used Pearl set the other day. I have not played for years and am not sure on the new stuff. I want to put on new heads on the whole set ( double bass with six toms and snare ) anyone know what a good brand is for a metal kinda sound. I would like black skins if possible.

I must agree with some previous posters. Aquarian's Super Kick II is my favorite bass drum head by far. ON my toms I use Evans G2 coated for my batters and the G1 clear for the reso's. On my snares I use ATTACKS terry bozzio signature series heads. It's a medium weight single ply head. My snare never sounded so good.

Yeah, a rather global question here, motox, the only thing I would strongly suggest is the Remo Fiberskin for your snare, as that gets the most use.

I would go with the ebony pinstripes.

We marched our tenor drums with the suede drum heads, and after you tuned it as high as you have to for tenor drums (pretty high) they sounded a little dead, and they didn't project as well. Very durable though. It's between the sound and durability, that you'll have to choose.

By the way, the suede heads will sometimes have a glue problem with the rim, and it cause the head to shift, if this happens you cant tune it correctly. You can usually tell if you've tuned the head high, and you still have a wrinkled dead spot.
I haven't had a problem with pinstripes yet. (although i use the clear ones) They're great sounding.

The REMO pinstripe is a great all-around drum head. Some people just don't like 2-ply heads and that's cool...but if you do it's a really good drum head that stays in tune and can take a pounding. And, if worse comes to worse and you bust the top ply...just peel it off and the second ply should get you through the show. Especially if you play tenors in the marching band.

I have haven't tried the pinstripes since I started playing drums. I didn't know how to tune, therefor I thought they sounded like crap when I put them on. Now that I have an understanding of tuning, I gain more respect for tuning.

For a good metal sound I think using Remo ebony heads on the bottom of the drum and Remo Pinstripes on the top. the pin stripes will give the drum a nice crisp sound and the ebony heads will diminish the high end sounds leaving a deeper sounding drum. On the kick I def would go with the Evans Emad that is a nice solid head, and for a great metal sound on the snare I like the Remo emporer X (I think I spelled that right.

I use the Superkick II setup with the Aquarian Reso on my Mapex kit, and I use the Superkick I on my premier kit. Those heads are awesome!

For kick drums I would recommend the Aquarian Superkick 2 or the Evans EMAD all the way. They're great heads and they can really take a pounding as long as you have a flam patch on them. Evans also sells ebony heads but most music stores don't carry them too often so you would probably be better off ordering them online. Hope this helps!

+1 on the Aquarian Super Kick 2.  Put that on the batter side and the Aquarian Regulator ported head on the audience side, you'll be good to go.  That's a GREAT combination for bass drum.

EDIT: Try tightening the Super Kick (batter) just a tad above the wrinkle stage.  Then tighren the Regulator head (reso) just a tad higher than that.  I'm guessing you'll like the results.

Well, there are tons and tons of heads you can try. If your looking for black heads, you have three choices (all of which made by remo).
-You can get the Remo Ebony(black) Pinstripe heads, which provide great durability and also give a more focused sound, which is good when your looking to sweep around the kit without unwanted overtones.

-You could try Remo's new "Black Suede" Emperor heads. These are a new and great addition to the Remo company, and they provide a very warm sound, and are also very durable. Not to mention the satin black look.

-You could also try Remo's "Black Suede" Ambassador heads. A little less durable than the emperor, these heads provide more sensitivity and open tones than most other two-ply heads do.

If your looking for heads to work for a Metal application, I would suggest either of the first two choices I listed above. Good luck, and let me know if you need anything else!
