Triggering my Kick Drum

drumhead101541 - Tue, 03/25/2008 - 15:54 | 7,871 views

I'm at this point now where I'm going to start playing out in the next few weeks, and I want to work on getting a good, full, and clean live sound. I figured one way of doing that would be to trigger my kick drum. Does anyone have any thought to how well this works, and if so, how do i make it work for the best price possible?

I was thinking of triggering my kicks, as well. The ddrum kick triggers usually have good reviews, so I'd go with that.

Ive been using a d4 for years to trigger my kick, the trick is get a single 15 cabinet your own 100-1200 watt amp cut all the highs back and you can great kick drum sounds outside or anywhere,Ive played venues for nearly 30 years and I started using the Alesis in 1996, and now I have to use it ,it helps when youre playing with guitarists who play too loud,oh yea that can get expensive but well worth it , I use Radio shack transducers
they cost 2bucks and solder a 1/4 chord on it and 2 sided tape, believe me I know 3 sound tech guys who use an Alesis d4 or dm5 triggered by mikes and the drums sound great without the bands even knowing it, especially when there are 7 or 8 bands ,ask a soundman(who owns his stuff) who does sound for aliving if theyve ever done that ,and remember its not just how good a kick drum mike is ,its how much power sent for the low end out front , a peavey cs 800 doesnt deliver like a Crown with 1/3 the power(Im old school)

I also was wondering about this my self, I am sick of relying on the sound tech to determine the mic sound of my bass drum there has been many shows I have played where I had thought the sound was great but upon further listening and watching the video you could barely hear my bass drum. I posted a topic like this on the gizmos and gadgets section. I need advice about triggering.

Well the main pad is the primary trigger on the pad. Roland's tom pads are muli-triggered (on of the center which is the main trigger, and the rim trigger) Most of the time when you use a mono 1/4 cable, you will only get the main trigger on a multi-trigger pad. Yes you can use a stereo cable.

I'm not sure what you mean by main pad sound and can't you use a sterio instrument cable like a good moster cable?

Pretty much. You can use any other 1/4in. to connect the V-Drums, but unfortunately it singles out the pad because it is a mono cable. You will basically get the the main pad sound.

I've seen you talk about the V-drums. I'm assuming you have
them. You can get a V-drum kick trigger for aroung $60.
It has quarter inch inputs so, any instrument cable will plug the trigger right into the module.

ddrum makes good triggers at a reasonable price.

Newer software out now such as Apple's Logic Studio may support some methods of clipping that allows you to change the sound on a track based on peak levels or sudden changes in the input levels. Pardon me if this has been around forever, but I've just heard about this concept and find it pretty sweet as well. I haven't had a chance to mess with it yet, and I'm wondering if it can do it on the fly during input / playback of live sounds.

If anyone knows about this concept, please speak up!

Well triggering, picks up that "whap" to use as a signal to send to an electronic drum brain, that produces a sound for that "whap". This is cool because when you trigger a drum, you immediately have the power to make the drum(s) what ever sound you want them to be, it all depends on the brain your using.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does it mean to "trigger"?  (This might be worth adding to the Terms and Definitions page).  It sounds like you just want to pick up the percussion sound of the beater hitting the batter head and not the resonance of the drum (i.e. the suggestion for using a mic for that).  What's the purpose for only picking up the "whap"?  Are there any sound bytes or videos distinguishing the difference in triggered vs non-triggered?

[Edit] Disregard my question.  I just remembered that I was in the electronic drums section.  I am assuming that this doesn't apply to traditional/acoustic drums...[/Edit]

I actually use and love my AKG D112 kick mic, i just wanted to trigger it also, so live I can use a different sound for like a woofer kick or something. Pretty just to play with i guess. My main kick sound will always come from the AKG D112

it'll be ok but ..your money is better spent on an AKG or other high end kick mic.
dont use stick-on triggers..the best luck i had was the trigger perfecrt and the d-4 (old school..lol) and layered that in with the mic..the trigger alone is not the answer..(it usually wont keep up)
use an evans pad inside your kick and dont be afraid to put deadning inside the front head.(not much..just around the edge)awsome kick sound isnt that hard  just dont overtighten your head..

I like the mic and guitar pickup triggering idea. That seems like a cool concept that won't cost a fortune.

I trigger my kick with a Piezeo guitar pickup. I just tape it next to where the beater hits and it never skips a beat. Cant beat the options of sampled kick sounds! You can go from an 808 to a tight jazz kick with the push of a button.
You can find used pickups really cheap or just make one out out of a piezeo.
Thats the cheapest way to go. You can also just throw a shure 58 in there and it will act like a trigger aswell. That is sometimes tricky though for miss triggering. Just try different things its quite simple tech.
hope that helps.

You could try a UKKO mic and save the hassle of triggers and sequencers. http://b-band.com/ukko/
