Hello, Just wanted to get anyones opinion on the new PDP x7 kits.. Ive read some mixed reviews ranging from people loving them to people saying they are cheap and everything in between. One common thing i read was that the snare was weak and sounded cheap?? any comments? The reason I ask is that i am considering moving from a lower PDP set to this set..

I would agree for the most part that someone looking for a bunch of toms it is a great set. However, I would suggest the FS Birch series from PDP above all other PDP kits. I have played the maple shells from thier lines and have to say that the FS drums sound great and the hardware is very durable. The birch shells sound fantastic with aftermarket heads and also makes for a great set to record. Birch is said to be naturally EQ'd that sound great for recording purposes. As far as PDP snares, yeah they aren't the best ever made, but can sound good with the right heads and tuning. But, snares are like cymbals, usually you have one already to add to the kit, or you buy them separate based on your preference. Buy quality used snares and cymbals to go with it and you will have a fantastic set to be proud of.

I agree with my boy above me. Gretch makes great kits at a great price but falls short on attractive finishes. If all else fails you could use Rockenwraps to spice it up a little if you don't mind spending the extra $$$.

I WORK AT GUITAR CENTER AND I SELL THOSE THINGS LEFT AND RIGHT! THEY ARE GREAT SETS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SACRAFICE TONE OR YOUR WALLET. ALTHOUGH THEY ARE A 6PLY MAHOGANY SHELL THE ONLY OTHER SET IN THAT PRICE POINT I WOULD SAY TO CHECK OUT IS THE GRETSCH CATILINA MAPLE. EVEN THOUGH IT IS A 6PC, THE TONE IS GOING TO CARRY ALOT MORE AND BE ALOT FULLER AS YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM A MAPLE. IT IS GREAT FOR PLAYING SHOWS AND SHIT. BUT IF YOU WOULD RATHER HAVE MORE TOYS TO PLAY AROUND WITH, WHICH WE ALL DO, I WOULD DEFINATLY GO WITH THE X7. THEY COME IN ALL SORTS OF BAD ASS FINISHES WHERE AS THE GRETSCH ONLY COMES IN A WINE RED, AMBER AND I THINK BLACK AS WELL. BUT THAT'S THE BEST PART ABOUT DRUMS IS THAT IT IS ALL UP TO THE DRUMMER AND THE MUSIC!
PARTY ON GARTH!

It's a good kit for people who want a lot of drums. Personally ...for what it costs I'd just go with the regular PDP. My student has one and it sounds good but they messed up one of the floor toms during shipping and PDP has been dragging their feet to replace it ever since. Some of the bearing edges didn't look too great either but you get that from time to time with all manufacturers. We had problems with that when I worked for GC.

I have played on these drums numerous times and they actually sound decent even with stocks heads. Any kit is going to sound better with aftermarket heads, and a good tuning job. I personally don't like that many drums, so the kit wouldn't apply to me.

I've not played these drums, but I have seen them. Their fit and finish looked well done and the hardware is quality stuff (as you would expect from a DW company).
They come in a nice selection of finishes and offer suspension tom mounts - not something you see in less expensive drum sets.
The range of tom sizes they offer for this series may be a bit limiting to some players who like deeper and/or many toms, but for most of us, the sizes would probably be just fine.
I can't comment on the snare drum sound. Keep in mind that the sound of a drum is pretty subjective. The person who made the comment may have heard a poorly tuned (or played) drum, or a drum with junk drum heads, or perhaps it was heard in less than favorable acoustic surroundings.
