Everyone loves getting a new drum kit, or even getting new drum heads. Every drum set comes with the factory logo front head, with no hole/port. This poses a problem for some people that like to mic up their kick drum through a hole in the front kick head. And even sometimes when you buy new resonant kick heads, they don't have the hole in them. There are two ways to fix the no-hole situation. You can take it to your local drum shop/music store and pay someone to cut it, or you can do it yourself at home. Doing it yourself is sometimes easier said than done. By cutting it yourself, you risk to not cut it round, you could injure yourself, and just get frustrated with the whole thing!
But now there is a cool new remedy for this project, that can pretty much guarantee a perfect hole every time! Basically you are melting a hole, using a can (empty, and of whatever size you please) that is heated enough to melt the mylar head. The link to the video below shows it all:

I still think the melting trick is one of the best ways to get it done, wish I found that video a couple years ago.

Most of the time I'll just get the Aquarian Regulator front head and call it a day, but If I ever need to cut a hole i'm going to use it this way. haha

That sounds like a good idea.Another good method is using a compass witk an x-acto knife.

Yep! Cut inside the line! You can always make the hole bigger - but it's a little tough to make it smaller once you've cut it! ;D

I've used those before and they work great once you manage to snap the thing on. They can be stubborn sometimes.

I've heard of them. I don't see them in too many stores though.

Has anyone tried the Holz kit? Comes with an easy-to-use template and a nice plastic finishing ring to protect the edge of the cut hole when finished.
The templates come in various sizes and the finishing rings are available in black, white, brass or chrome. They can also do custom colors. They have a speed cutter available as well, to help you make the cut without losing a finger or damaging the head.
I've used them with great success.

Wish I'd known about that a couple years ago. It would have saved me a lot of time, money, and foul language.
