Well done! I played through the era of stoner physics, when everyone said that you needed to remove the bottom/resonant heads "to let the sound out".
It was really dumb, resulted in crappy sounding drums, and lots of lost hardware (perpetually for sale on your nearby ebuy). Soundmen loved it because they could isolate all the mics. Luckily, someone noticed that the drums really didn't sound all that good and we returned to two heads.
Two heads are better than one.
This seems like a much better method of cutting a BD port hole. Usually, I like to make mine a little bit larger, so I can get my arm inside and stow the tom mount,if there is one, inside the BD between gigs. That way, it always there, when I'm setting up and not stowed in a different h/w case.
I find that I can also get a decent BD sound by using one of the adjustable BD mufflers made by Leedy,Ludwig & Slingerland, that clipped to the front BD hoop, back in the day. Then, soundguy just positions the BD mic right off the front head about where the port would be.
I prefer the Aquarian SKII batter head, though I've had pretty good luck with Powerstroke III's recently.EMAD's seem good, but spendy.
To muffle a resonant head, you can get camper mounting foam tape from the h/w store, about 1"x3/8". It is self-stick on one side. If the reso side rings too much, jsut cut off some 8" +o- sections and stick them to the inside head surface, symetrically placed. Closer to the center deadens the tone more. I usually use three in a kind of open triangle, but sometimes, two is enough....depending on your taste.
