The benefits of studying with a teacher

Dave Heim - Wed, 07/16/2008 - 10:44 | 6,593 views

Many new drummers are eager to play loud and fast.  Many are inspired by monster chop players of certain bands or specific musical genres, and they want to play just like that player.  And they want to play just like that RIGHT NOW!

Fact is, it takes time, practice, dedication, perserverence, frustration, and endless patience to get there.  Perhaps the absolute best way to get there is to study with a drum teacher.

A qualified teacher:

[li]can give you the feedback and motivation you need to move you along.[/li]
[li]can suggest tips and tricks that might save time - things they've learned themselves over the years.[/li]
[li]can suggest effetive lesson books and exercises.[/li]
[li]can look over your shoulder and let you know when you're doing something incorrectly (when you might think you're doing it correctly)[/li]
[li]can stop you from developing bad habits, bad grips, bad technique.[/li]
[li]can help you learn how to read real music notation.[/li]

So, if you really want to improve - and improve quickly - sign up for some lessons with a quailified teacher.

Nice post Dave and I couldn't agree more. And drummers should really "shop" around for the right teacher the same way they shop around for that perfect sounding cymbal. Ask other great drummers in your area who they studied with or who they recommend. It will definitely be worth the time invested.

Amen to that brother. And don't worry about messing up in front of the instructor. You're supposed to mess up so he/she can see your weaknesses to help make you a better musician.
