Many new drummers are eager to play loud and fast. Many are inspired by monster chop players of certain bands or specific musical genres, and they want to play just like that player. And they want to play just like that RIGHT NOW!
Fact is, it takes time, practice, dedication, perserverence, frustration, and endless patience to get there. Perhaps the absolute best way to get there is to study with a drum teacher.

Nice post Dave and I couldn't agree more. And drummers should really "shop" around for the right teacher the same way they shop around for that perfect sounding cymbal. Ask other great drummers in your area who they studied with or who they recommend. It will definitely be worth the time invested.

Amen to that brother. And don't worry about messing up in front of the instructor. You're supposed to mess up so he/she can see your weaknesses to help make you a better musician.
