ARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHIES:

John Riley (USA)
(Professor of Drumset at the Manhattan School of Music New York)
(Performed/recorded with: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz)
John Riley has long been the World’s No. 1 when it comes to educating young Jazz Drummers. Ever since becoming a Professor of Jazz Drumset at the Manhattan School of Music in New York (one of the most expensive in the world), Riley has taught and mentored literally ‘who-is-who’ of the NYC jazz drumming scene (Ari Hoenig, Bill Stewart, Marcus Baylor, Obed Calvaire, Kim Thompson, Mark Guiliana, Jonathan Blake, Dan Weiss, Joe Farnsworth, Ben Perowsky, EJ Strickland, and many more). Having performed and recorded with the World’s most famous jazz musicians such as: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Bob Berg, Woody Herman, Joe Lovano etc. - as many as 13 albums on which he played were honoured by a GRAMMY Award nomination, out of which three albums also won the prize. Riley’s dedication to reaching young jazz drummers across the world in his conquest to help educate and develop their talents has led him to write five educational books and DVD’s on jazz drumming, among which “The Art of Bop Drumming” and “The Jazz Drummer’s Workshop”– both widely acclaimed for their advanced and technically challenging approach. Riley has also taught at the SUNY Purchase and The New School in New York, and has been appointed mentor-in-residence at the Amsterdam Conservatoire of Music in Holland. Riley’s love for drumming began at the age 8, when he received his first Snare Drum as a birthday gift from his parents. He graduated from the legendary University of North Texas in Denton (the World’s first University Jazz Program) and earned his Masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music, where he currently teaches Jazz Drumset.

John Riley exclusively plays Zildjian cymbals/sticks, Remo Heads and Yamaha drums.

Trevor Tomkins (UK)
(Professor of Drumset at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School Performed/recorded with: Gilgamesh, Michael Garrick, Ian Carr, Roy Budd)

Trevor Tomkins is truly A Living Legend of the British Jazz! Not only was he the teacher for many of the most successful British drummers (Ralph Salmins, Andrew Bain, Holly Madge, Winston Clifford) during his 30-year stint as Chair of Drumset Performance at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, but he has also been one of the pioneers of the early British Jazz-Fusion music. Trevor has performed and recorded with bands and artists such as: Gilgamesh, Sir Michael Garrick, Ian Carr, Henry Lowther, Roy Budd, and has also been the drummer of choice for some of the well-known American jazz artists on their European tours (Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Sonny Stitt, Pepper Adams, Art Farmer). Incredibly humble natured as a person, those ‘in the know’ rightly place Tomkins at the very top of the European Jazz!

Kim Plainfield (UK)
(Head of Faculty at The Drummers Collective, Professor at Berklee College of Music; performed/recorded with: The Pointer Sisters, John Pattitucci, Tania Maria, Didier Lockwood)

In comparison with Riley and Tomkins, Plainfield represents a ‘newer generation’ of Contemporary Drumset educators. Widely acclaimed as Funk, Fusion and Afro-Cuban Specialist, Plainfield has made his name as educator teaching at the so-called ‘Contemporary Music Institutes’, where equal focus is being placed on Artistic skill as well as Commercial value of the Musical Profession. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California, Plainfield moved to the East Coast in the mid 1970’s and soon became one of the first drum teachers hired to work at the Drummers Collective in New York City – the same institute where he is today Faculty Chairman. He began his professional career playing with Mingo Lewis at age 19, which was soon followed by working with The Pointer Sisters, best known for their hit single “I’m So Excited”. While in New York City, Plainfield also collaborated with many well-regarded fusion musicians, such as: Bill Connors and Didier Lockwood. Their albums “Double Up”, “Assembler” and “Live At The Olympia” are all considered iconic works of the contemporary fusion music, and Plainfield has recorded drums on all three of them! Plainfield has received international recognition during his 7-year tenure with Tania Maria, with whom he has toured all over the world. Plainfield has been on faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston since 2002. His own educational book/CD “Advanced Concepts” has proven very popular with students of progressive drumming, and he has taught drum clinics across Europe, USA, Japan and Central America discussing the concepts he wrote about in his book. Plainfield’s former students include: Billy Martin, Anton Fig, Zach Danziger, Will Calhoun, Marko Djordjevic, Chris Coleman and many more.

Kim Plainfield exclusively plays Sonor Drums, Paiste Cymbals, Remo Heads and Vater Sticks.

Petar Curic (Croatia)
(Founding Director & Camp Coordinator)
Croatian-born and USA/UK-educated Performing Artist and Social Entrepreneur, Curic earned both his Master's and Bachelor's Degrees in England: 2010 at the University of Surrey under Trevor Tomkins (Jazz) and 2002 at the University of Huddersfield under Chris Bradley (Classical Percussion). Curic also spent two years
in Denton, TX, enrolled as graduate student at the University of North Texas, working under Ed Soph's direct or indirect mentorship. Additionally, in 2003, he spent a year living and playing all kinds of gigs in Los Angeles, California. Finalist of 'Yamaha Young Percussionist of the Year' Competition at the Royal College of Music in London, and Winner of Truscott and Vic Firth-Megamuzika Prizes for Excellence, Curic has taught Drumset and Percussion Performance at various Croatian, British and American Schools, High Schools and Colleges, most recently on the degree course at The Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in London, England. Increasingly more active in the Pop music circuits as of lately, Curic currently plays drums with UK/Brazilian Rapper Aggro Santos, famous for his UK Top-5 Hit Single «Candy».
