Hand Issues

WraithDagger - Mon, 07/21/2008 - 00:20 | 7,078 views

I have been drumming for 10+ years and had to take a  long hiatus from the kit due to a death in my family and all the drawn out drama that goes with that. well I sat down at my kit and after about 15 mins of playing I found my right hand and wrist getting numb and then getting down right painful... I couldnt keep a grip on my stick and would have to stop for upwards of 10 mins at a time... is there something wrong or do  I just need to push thru?

Best thing you can do is actually stretch and warm-up prior to just outright jamming...
A good way I usually start with is 30 to 45 minutes on a practice pad alongside a metronome, or if I can access it, a Tama Rhythm-Watch, always something drummers of every kind should be interested in.
Get a hold of those grips, (not sure of the name) where you can squeeze, you know? Use those 20 minutes a day and your hand-strength should increase and your endurance will grow to play longer sets.
I've been playing for about sixteen years now and haven't had a problem following what MP of DT says, if he says it, it is probably right.
Hope it helps!

Try the congas on for size then! I play those and bongos. My hands are always sore after I play, but it's more like that sore after a good workout

You may have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. There are a ton of articles you could research but start with this and see if it helps you out. The guy who runs this site is a member here as well and this is an article from his health section.http://www.handidrummed.com/articles/tv2ct_part1.php There are three parts so make sure to read the whole thing. Good luck and remember.....what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, or cripples you for life.

I am going to get the Jojo Mayer DVD to see if it will help... also I use ProMark Hickory sticks 7As as my primary practice sticks...

Too much vibration is seriously bad for your hands. Any kind of oak drumsticks are not good because they don't soak vibration the just send it right into your hand. I loved my Neil Peart Signature sticks until my hands started to hurt after everytime I played.

Yes, the Secret Weapon DVD. That's it.

It may very well be something that can be cleared up with a tweak of your technique. . .

BUT, pain and numbness are indications that something is not right.  I would encourage you to have a doctor or chiropractor check it out.

DO NOT push through.....unless your in the middle of a gig.
It is a technique issue. Jojo Mayer's new DVD WILL fix your problem. After just 30min a night for the first week my technique improved. I can now play hard and fast with no fatigue and I have more control over the delicate stuff too.
Jojo hooked it up for all of us.

Are you referring to the Secret Weapon DVD by JoJo Mayer? I've got that one, and it is impressive. Perhaps I should just sit down for a week and stop playing along to songs and practice his technique to break through some left-handed issues.

I do have those Power Wrist Builders :)

Sounds like growing pains to me, but I'm no doctor. I know exactly what you are talking about. I've felt that during drumming and I also feel it when I'm riding my motorcycle, mostly in my right hand.

I'd say make sure you stretch out really well. Check the Vic Firth stretches, my old instructor got me on those and it helps. Be sure to just shake your wrists and hands out really well. I bet that was the first instinct.

If you're getting back into playing, also wouldn't hurt to invest in some frozen pea bags if you're going to get serious. Gregg Bissonette at recent clinic preached about cooling down your muscles. I'd say Gregg's advice is worthy!

Stretch, shake it out, don't grip too hard, remember your arms are getting tremendous vibrations, and cool them off when you're done!
