Drum Tab/Sheet Music

Joe77 - Fri, 07/11/2008 - 13:57 | 6,328 views

What is the best resource for getting tab or sheet music (for a trap set of course) for specific bands?  I tried mxtabs.net, but they are pretty limited after the whole "regulations" crap started with the music industry.  I can only seem to find various artist books in the music stores around here.  Call me a perfectionist, but I would like to play as closely as I can to the covers.

Guitar Pro is a thing that a lot of guitarists use to get Tabs and to write. On http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ people will upload Tabs & Notation of Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, Percussion, and any other instrument in the specific song you are trying to find.

On the website they have a free (I think 5-day) trial. The full version is $60 a year. I ended up buying the full version, because I used it so often.

As far as drum tabs, I've only been able to find tabs for the who at:

http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/index.html

Usually I just listen to the song a hundred times and play along with it.

If you Google "drum tabs" it gives you several sites that could help you out if you wanna go that route, sometimes tabs can be a little confusing. But just remember tabs are based off of musical notation so studying actual music would be more beneficial in the long run...and it will help you to understand drum tabs.

Dave,

Thanks for your reply.  I guess I'm not sure what "standard notation tabs". . .

Sorry I wasn't clear on that.  By standard music notation I meant regular notes & rests on a lined staff, broken into measures - the kind you are learning to read.  That is considered stanradr notation - as opposed to tablature (tabs), which originated as a way to indicate where to place your fingers on guitars and other instruments with frets. Personally, I think tabs are kind of a klutzy way of representing drum music.  I'd stick with good ole standard notation!

Dave,

Thanks for your reply.  I guess I'm not sure what "standard notation tabs" are, but I am going to go looking for them now.  Also didn't know about Audacity - another mission that I will embark on.  I completely agree that most of what can be found for drummers is crap (as far as the learning aids).

Thanks again for your reply, you have been a valuable help.

It's a bit of a wild goose chase.  It's not easy to find reliable (i.e. correctly transcribed) sheet music for drums.  Some of the song books on the market for specific band have drum parts in them, but they'
re usually crap.  Tabs are even worse.  I much prefer standard music notation to tabs.

You mentioned in your intro post that you're studying music.  I think that's actually key.  Once you get better at reading, you'll be able to listen to the parts being played and simply write them out for yourself.  Free audio software like Audacity lets you slow the songs down which can often help you to decipher the parts more easily.
