Magic Mike's Mad Mondays - Vintage Istanbul K Zildjian week!

Mr. Skitch - Tue, 09/14/2010 - 04:16 | 1,121 views

Magic Mike’s Mad Mondays – the beginning but not the end:

Vintage cymbal week!

Vintage K Zildjian 20” Ride cymbal with rivets – This is an Istanbul K with the strike mark stating “MADE IN TURKEY K. ZILDJIAN & CO INSTANBUL ZILDJIAN.” This cymbal was originally purchased at Frank Ippolito’s Drum shop in New York City by John Fort has since passed away. This is a fine example of the K Zildjians Gretsch used to distribute back in the day. This cymbal was purchased in the mid to late 1960s and features places for 6 rivets but currently has four brass rivets. As stated in the auction text, John intentionally “keyholed” this cymbal as was a fairly common practice in the 1950s and 1960s (and possibly the 1970s) to get the sweet spot on turned on the cymbal stand to a position where the drummer was always playing on that sweet spot. This practice has been confirmed by Ed Shaughnessy himself.

There is no reserve on this fine cymbal and no “Buy It Now” but if you have an offer, feel free to make it!

Vintage K Zildjian 18” Crash/Ride – The same story here – This is an Istanbul K with the strike mark stating “MADE IN TURKEY K. This cymbal was purchased in the mid to late 1960s. These cymbals are incredible for their age and for being handmade. Strangely enough, the edges are smooth with no chips or rough spots morer commonly found on the mass produced A Zildjians of Norwell. Again, as stated in the auction text, John intentionally “keyholed” this cymbal as was a fairly common practice in the 1950s and 1960s (and possibly the 1970s) to get the sweet spot on turned on the cymbal stand to a position where the drummer was always playing on that sweet spot. This practice has been confirmed by Ed Shaughnessy himself.

As stated on the cymbal above, there is no reserve on this cymbal and there is no "Buy It Now" but if you have an offer, feel free to make it!
