Lost it...

Javz - Fri, 01/15/2010 - 23:44 | 5,490 views

Or at least I think I did!
Here's the deal, recently I've been feeling kinda uncomfortable while drumming on my own, with my band and even with play-alongs. Can't stay in the pocket and my fills are way too repetitive and boring. My bandmates don't notice but as a drummer, I'm feeling incompetent, like a football player with a broken leg or something like that.

I think I lost my groove, has this happened to anyone?

Any suggestions would be reeaaally appreciated.

I'm in the slump now.. has something to do with seasons for me... but I get bursts of energy and want to play, and those are the times I have fun playing... Focus your mind back onto the task and try to get into it. https://DrummerConnection.com/playalongs is a great place to jam out too! Get you back on track with the click!

Thank you all for the advice. I've been trying what you said... I started to workout again and I'm feeling like new (I'm even losing some weight haha!). I think I'm already feeling better about this.

Last Saturday (January 16th) I went to one of the best concerts... of the year? :P
Cynic + Between the Buried and Me + Scale the Summit + Devin Townsend Project. Was amazing... I've got a lot of ideas for fills and stuff. Can't wait to practice with my band... or my neighbors to wake up!

Thanks! :)

It sounds like you're getting some good advice so if you can do the suggested things then give them a try. Some times we're unable to just walk away from our kits for any extended period of time because of gigs, recording dates and you may be doing this for living. So if you can't away try this. Take a bike ride, play some basketball or go for a run. Get some exercise and take your mind off the music. Find something that will inspire you besides music. A good movie or book, build a model, do a puzzle or something else creative will help separate you for a while. When your not playing music just try to clear your head of it. If or when you lose your groove, and it's not by something physical, IT'S IN YOUR HEAD, so clear it!

We all need to live in balance so if this is more then just a bad performance, find some balance, clear your head and things will groove again. Good luck and let us know when and what worked best for you to get your groove back so you can share it with the rest of us.

I think you need a break from drumming. Take a short break and relax. Maybe you just need to unwind from the stress that you are feeling. Then after that break, your rhythm will be back. Because if not, you will not be able to find your rhythm and that would be like the end of the world. By the way, on Thursday, January 14th, the heads of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago will reset the Doomsday Clock. Currently, we're at 5 minutes to midnight (midnight representing utter disaster such as nuclear war) and we've never been closer than 2 minutes to midnight. It only gets moved when the Bulletin sees fit – so you can't get a couple payday loans and get them to induce panic. The Doomsday Clock, for those that missed it, was established in the late 1940s at the beginning of the Cold War when Russia became the second nuclear power in the world, and things took a turn.

Hey Jav!
I feel your pain! If I'm understanding you correctly, I get the same feeling periodically. It's kind of a "Burn-out". What I do is to take a short "sabbatical" and walk away from the drums for a bit. After a bit of a non-drum environment, being a drummer that you are, you'll find yourself tapping rhythms on surfaces and closely listening to the drum parts in songs. You'll eventually know it's time to sit back down to your kit and feel more refreshed about it.
Hope this helps (and that I'm understanding you correctly and not just making a fool of myself... :-)
