Snare Head and Tom heads

DrumBum27 - Sat, 12/05/2009 - 14:35 | 7,182 views

I am A percussion Major, under Dale Baker, The drummer for "Sixpence None The Richer." Sound qaulity is very important, and I have to keep my heads in great shape!

I am currently using an Remo Ambassador Snare head, its getting close to time to replace it, and I want to try something different. I love a very tight, crisp snare hit, without a lot of ring, or overtones, but not so controlled that ghost notes don't ring out in shuffle playing or something like such. Any Suggestions?

Toms are holding Ebony heads, They are the one ply versions. I believe the ambassadors. Not 100% sure.
Love the sound the can produce. Very happy with them, but being that they are one ply, and that I do a lot of live performance's where hard hitting is mandatory for good volume, they are not gonna last long. Do the 2 ply versions have a similar sound? Or is it completely different? What are some good "Warm" heads?

Thanks a lot!!

Thanks guys. I hunkered down and switched to Evens. I love the look of black heads on stage, so im trying the Onyx Head.. Its 2 ply. Has a great warm tone, and a very very aggressive attack. Not too bad on sustain, even without dampening,, and overall sounds great.. Haven t tried it live yet,, and semester is out,, and I'm on vacation.. WHOOHOO!! Start gigging again in 2 weeks.. Cant wait!!!

In reply to webadmin, I have tried to get Dale to talk about six pence, but he isn't really willing to talk a lot about it. I'm not sure if their is some tension between band members or what,, but ya. He said he enjoyed the 7+ years he spent with them, but that it was time to move on. He is an amazing percussionists though, and is a great teacher! Learned so much from him!
I believe he teaches Private lessons outside of the college I'm in, but not sure.

Remo Renaissance heads come in single and double ply's, very warm. Evans has the j1 etched heads that are also quite nice. I use fiberskyn3's from Remo on my snares. Pricey, but worth every penny.

WOW! What ever happened to that group after their hit song "Kiss Me"? I recently heard a emo band do a HORRIBLE cover of it. Anywho... I agree with Keith about the snare head, not just because that's what I use as well but it's a great head. For toms I like Evans EC2 clear.

Very good that you are looking to keep a great sound, it is very important to your playing! I see you play mostly remo. Have you tried Evans heads? That's what I'v been using for a good 3-4 years now and I love them. Hmm well as far as toms are concerned, i your looking for a 2-ply warm sound, I would suggest the Evans G2 Coated, (clear is good too). That give my drums a pretty durable, warm sound. For the snare drum, there are soo many options, it's just what feels right to you. I personally use the evans Genre HD Dry snare drum head. It's 2 play pretty much like a g2, but it's very focused on the hard smacks. Great head for he money

you can try Remo vintage emperors or vintage ambassadors. The Emperors have a deeper sound, still warm.
