Kick drum/Bass drum exercises

simoneady - Sun, 11/08/2009 - 11:50 | 6,593 views

Hi there,

I currently play a single pedal and have found myself being to reliant on my toms when I am very sure the kick drum would be more appropriate.

Can anyone direct me to proven kick drum exercises that will help improve?

Thanks in advance.

I've never felt the need for a double pedal or double BD. Not saying my single foot can do all the heavy double-pedal stuff, but it can do what I need it to do.

Double strokes between hands/foot.

Different groups of hands/foot strokes: 3/1, 3/2, 4/1, 4/2, etc.

Six stroke rolls substituting the bass drum for either (and both!) of the accented single strokes.

Play ruffs (and flams too, I guess) with BD playing the grace notes.

Play single strokes around your drums using the BD for half of the single strokes. Play 8ths, triplets, 16ths, etc., changing note values on the fly.

I'm no BD expert, but this stuff works well for me.

I'm definately no pro either, and have to agree about a double BD or pedal..Tho I have found it to be good arsenal in your tool box. there are times when I like to be able to use a double, preferably pedal..I'm not into all the heavy blast beats and am a solid believer of doing your best with your single before advancing to a double. And I like to use my left foot for good hi hat work. having a double means using a drop clutch which adds to the complication of timing and coordination.

Check out Bass Drum Control by Colin Bailey. Excellent book for the single pedal.

Get a metronome and play quarters, sixteens, triplets, until you cant take it anymore...that should improve your feet chops, God knows i need to.
