I need a different stick.

inclineline606 - Sat, 09/05/2009 - 13:19 | 6,939 views

I've been using Vater 5A Nylon (Los Angels//VH5AN) for almost all the nine months I've been playing, but lately I've been practicing more and more and playing harder stuff, and they've been breaking. They break just under the tip on the shoulder (I'll put some pictures on my profile) after a week to three weeks. Now mind you, my cymbals are like sheet metal and they have jagged edges, and I'm in no position to even considering getting new anything except for sticks.

I love Vater sticks and I think they're great quality, but I want to find a different brand or style stick that won't break as easily on me. I'm still looking for Nylon tips, but I want longer sticks and I wouldn't mind a bigger circumference either. The 5As are 16" in length with a diameter of .570".

Any suggestions that won't break my budget? I'm still in high school with only an allowance and money from mowing the lawn!

try a 3a as the shoulder it way better or they have a new model of the black stick that is a 5a ish stick but beefy shoulder. warrior or something? there are 3 of them. you break them at the weak spot for heavy hitters like us. get on the site and find demensions of 5a and pick one that has a better shoulder for you. remember though, the stick will feel heavier as it has more weight up front.....keith

as long as the stick fits the hand comfortably, and you can play drums with them, the buy them and rock on!

Everything you guys have said is great, but I had a pair of 5B's, and my hands hate them. I'm trying to change my grip, but no results so far. My hands still feel sore or cramp-ish after I play. Granted, I mostly play for about an hour straight.
I prefer nylon because I like the sound, but I'll try a pair of whole Hickory on the Extreme 5A's. Thanks again. :D

I found that with Vater sticks aswell I broke sticks all the time - i moved from nylon tips to all wood and havent broken a pair of sticks in 2 years....

wow, thats the total opposite i found! could not keep vic firth together at all! when i got talked into trying vaters, i found a smaller grip, beefier shoulder stick and have not broke one even on stage in 3 years. cant say anything about the standard models though. i use fatback 3a nylons and have tried the warrior stick too. both have major chucky shoulders, i just cant do black sticks....keith

Any brand of Stick but move to 5B and a good Hickory will last much longer...I personally do not like the plactic tips...I've used them and the same thing happened to me...every practice or gig I was loosing tips or they broke at the neck. Sounds like you play hard, I suggest you change to a all wood 5B Stick Hickory and you'll be ready to rock...RockSteady

I agree, I love the Vic Firth 5B or 5B Extremes(a tiny bit longer than standard 5B) , and always wood tip for me. More of a natural sound on the ride. Try that :]

Well if your looking for a good pair of 5A's that are a tad longer and that will last longer, try the Vic Firth Extreme 5A's, wood or nylon tip. I personally play the 5B extremes with wood tip, and they last longer than any 5B stick I've ever played. I played Vater for like 2 years and switched to Vic and love them!
