so i've been wanting a new high hat for a few years. I've been using a pair of sabian rock hats for... a while now and while i like certain qualities about them i also dislike some others. they have an alright sizzle when the hats are barely touching, but they are a little bit trash can like when it comes to playing them closed or fully open for my taste. They are not terrible, but i think i would rather have something else. I have been interested in the 14" zildjian new beats (preferably vintage) as well as smaller brands like bosphorus. Any other ideas or recommendations? I'm using k custom darks and a k custom dry ride, so maybe something to compliment that? Thanks.

Last winter I picked up a pair of 16" (that's right) Zildjian K-light high-hats from the local shop. They are thin and warm and very responsive, with a solid chick that keeps me steppin'. I love them! ... and the musicians in the ensembles I play with can't get enough of them. I have put away my old sabians now.... maybe forever...
P.S. I play a K Custom Dry Light ride, and while the hats are a bit different in sound, they compliment each other well.

if you look at any of the lessons Billy has done, you'll see his ride in there! It has a aged finish to it, It's awesome!

I like "dark" cymbals. Hi hats of interest would be Bosphorus Master Series Vintage(recommended), K Constantinoples(make sure you can hear these before purchase as some sound bad), K Custom High Def, K Custom Dark, Meinl Byzance Jazz Dark, the closest thing Sabien has is the HHX Manhattan Jazz and they are still a little bright for my taste. Hope this helps.

Well I also like the fact that you play K customs, great stuff. But I wouldn't limit myself to just k's when it comes to hi-hats you can basically go with anything youd like. It doesn't have to be any certain set of hats. Whatever sounds good to your ear, get them. It's all personal preference :]

so true about limiting to oneself to just K's. hats (like snares and other cymbals) are so versatile, sometimes its nice to have more than one pair just to mix it up. plus having more than one pair also allows you to mix top and bottom hats from different pairs.
but if you can only get one set.... I'd make sure it sonically matches the overall sound of your cymbal arrangement.

Yeah as long as the cymbal sounds good with the rest, i don't see why you couldn't put any cymbal you wanted in your setup. And it's not bad at all to have a few "odd-ball" cymbals in your arsenal :]

first, i like that you're playing on k custom darks and a dry ride. I'm trying to get more on the k custom dark side myself...
Matter of fact, I believe zildjian has new K hihats out, you should check those out and keep it all in the family.
Me personally, I would stay away from new beats and/or any A series stuff. Will be too bright for your K's.

I totally agree... K's will never be brash... and they *all* seem to work well together... as you say "in the family"
