Rick Van Horn is best known to the drumming world through his twenty-four years with Modern Drummer, the world’s most widely read drumming magazine. Rick started as a regular columnist for the magazine in 1980, and his “Club Scene” column provided helpful tips on the subject of being a working drummer in hundreds of subsequent issues. (Rick has also written a best-selling book on the subject.) After joining the staff of Modern Drummer in November of 1983 as managing editor, Rick was later promoted to the post of senior editor, a position he held until February of 2008.
Rick is also a veteran professional drummer. His performing career covers the musical gamut, from high-energy rock and show bands to jazz trios and pit percussion for Broadway musicals. Currently, Rick is anchoring the touring band for 1960s vocal supergroup Jay & The Americans, playing dates across the U.S. and Canada.
As an educator, Rick has presented clinics and drum performances around the world, including the Cape Breton International Drum Festival. He's also a faculty member for the KoSA International Percussion Workshops, which take place each summer in Vermont. And he’s on the faculty at the University Of The Arts in Philadelphia, where he teaches undergraduate classes on how to be a working drummer, as well as graduate classes on music journalism.
Rick is also continuing his career as an internationally recognized drum journalist. His columns on the topic of being a working drummer have appeared in Australia’s Drumscene and Italy’s Percussioni. Rick has also conducted recent interviews with Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee, The Last Vegas’s Nate Arling, and Ross Garfield (The Drum Doctor) for Guitar Center’s monthly drum newsletter.
