I'd turn the overheads up a little, because the cymbals are pretty quiet. Unless that's what you were going for.

Hi Eric...The mix sounds pretty good....the Snare has a nice tone and sweet "crack" to it when you really hit it...the kik however,in my opinion is a little muffled and could have a tad more punch to it, maybe placing the mic closer to the batter head would give it a bit more of an attack or a "click" to the sound in the final mix...love the wee bit of reverb on the snare as well. Keep em' coming Eric..........Gordon.A.Mitchell

Hey buddy, thanks for the input. I have tweaked the drums quite a bit since this recording. The metronome in the first track makes it difficult to mix because it's so loud. Thanks for the input!!

DF, the new mix really brings the drums out. I especially like the stereo field and panning setup. I know you told me the hardware you used, but now Id like to see pics of the room layout around the kit... the image depth is excellent! Great job Mr Eric... Bobby

I added two more playalongs I did from 02/19/2010 The Ecstasy of Groove and Groove Rock. Tell me what you think of those changes if you don't mind :)

Ok, "The Ecstasy of Groove" sounds like a combo between 60's secret agent rock meets metal. And "Groove Rock" is a straight forward rockin' number. On a scale of 1 - 5, you get 5's from me. There's stuff I'm learning from you too my friend whether you believe it or not (believe it).

Eric, the mix is fab. And your drumming is spot on! Most drummists here put little to no low end and only want that cripsy high eq which makes it sound too weird. I don't quite know how to explain it. I was also told that the best way to check your recordings is to listen to them in the car. Don't ask me why but I still do to this day lol.

Also, I know what you mean about low end. I spent many years flying on turboprop airplanes and I think the low end in my hearing spectrum is dull or non existent. I always over overcompensate on the low end of my mix and ends up way too boomy... mostly because I can't hear the low end that well :(

My contemporaries seem to think that a bass drum needs to have high end attack to it with little to no low end. It makes recordings sound weird to me. lol.
Barefoot Says Nice mix...
Submitted On: Friday, Feb 19, 2010 - 9:14 PM
Mr Eric.. the mix across the drums is nicely balanced. Like everything else about music, a lot of it is subjective and preference. Mostly due my own hearing limitations and preferences, I think I would try +2db on the drums overall, and eq boost the highs to get more definition of the cyms and especially the hats. But I know my high end prefs are usually too much for most people. Still, I would definitely crank up the "Eric" a tad ;-) I would like to know what hardware combination you are using to record. Great playlist too!

Hey Barefoot! I agree after listening to it in my car today, it sounded a little flat and perhaps the drums a tad bit low. I also think there's too much kick which I adjusted today before I played.
On this kit, I'm using Audix DP5 which is the Audix Drum Mic - I5, D6 on the kick, and the D series tom mics. On the overheads, I'm using AKG C-1000's in a pair. I also have a pencil mic under my snare but don't use it much, and another on my left side between my side snare and hats, mostly pointed at the side snare and panned to the left.
I use MOTU 896 MK3 firewire boards to record in to MAC Pro with Logic Studio 9.
Thanks for the tips!
