They're basically Evans version of the Remo suede series. To be honest, I don't know anyone who's purchased a set that's been happy with them UNLESS you're looking for a particular sound. Black heads have always been kind of a fad when it comes to anything. It looks cool but that's all it really is... a look. Ebony heads, pitch black cymbals,black on black drum kits,anarchy cowbells and the coolest...black nickel/chrome. Most companies just go with black because it's a cool looking color, it's safe, and it matches everything. Want to rejuvenate an old product? Alter the appearance ever so sightly...and paint ti black.

It would be nice if head manufacturers took the time to record all of their heads on one kit just so you could hear a comparison. It may not be how they sound on your kit, but at least you could get a feel for it. I'm using Evans Hydraulics at the moment, and it's gonna cost me about $150 to change tom heads (top and bottom), since I have 8 thru 18. I'm torn between the new Onyx and the EC2 ranges (though a word from Evans' rep, the Onyx don't work too well on the small tom sizes), and it would be nice to compare before spending the cash...

I agree with you. Usually by the time you get the sound, it's burried into the song and you can't distinguish the sounds of the head.
