Mitch Mitchell, the powerhouse rhythm section behind the Jimmy Hendrix Experience Band has died at the age of 61. Mitchell was found dead inside of his hotel room at the Benson Hotel in Portland , Oregon early Wednesday morning. Although an autopsy has yet to be released the Multnomah County medical examiner claimed the musician died of natural causes.
Fate would have it that Mitch, the last surviving member of the "Experience" would say his goodbyes to the world after the last performance which ended an 18 date tour with Experience Hendrix, an concert tribute series to the late guitar legend. I would seem only appropriate that he would die on the road as a performer doing what he loved to do. Hendrix's sister, Janie Hendrix, mentioned in a statement:
"We're all devastated to hear of Mitch's passing. He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated. Over the course of the recent tour, he seemed delighted with the interchange with the other musicians and the audiences. There is no question that he was doing what he loved."
