I use this style a lot...left hand playing the butt-end and right hand playing conventional...I find that you get a deeper toned crack when playing the power rim-shot and I use it for cross-sticking my Russ Miller Wedge which gives a lower tone with loads of volume and also useful when playing ghost notes along with the power rim-shot.
