Drum Corp and Swing Band

rushdrummer13 - Mon, 09/29/2008 - 23:24 | 7,677 views

I know this site is mostly about drum set but I'm guessin some of you guys are in marching bands. I've got a question for you guys: What's the difference between a drum corp band and a swing band. I was talking to this guy on the other team's band and he says that they are a swing band and we're a corp band. Help me out here. And a marching band forum might be cool to put on drummer connection.

We plan on covering some of the WGI and FFCC events this season, let me know if your high school is competing this year so I can come check you guys out. Maybe even crash a practice or two?

Tenor drums. Lots of fun i think i'll stick with them for a while. I can play snare but i love the range in tones you get with tenors. its like having a whole bass line in one drum xD

I hear ya. Some bands can pull off a good drill with a lot of members but it takes a great director and a great staff to coordinate everything and unfortunately they come very few and far between. Hey Kyle, what do you play in the marching band?

To be honest it would be really hard to get 200+ people moving in precision on a high school or collegiate level. That's why most drum corps are smaller in some comparisons. I like to see big bands but you sacrifice your drill by having so many bodies on the field , kinda hard to move everyone around everyone...know what I mean? In any case stick with marching band, you'll have a lot of fun and it will serve to  further develop you as a musician. Years later when all the washed up athletes are still telling stories about the glory days you can say "Oh, that sucks for you because I still have my talent so I can still play the drums. Matter of fact I'm better now than I was back then." Somehow I don't think the jocks have the same argument.
CAN I GET A AMEN FROM THE CONGREGATION!!

My band was 190 members strong this year, we had DCI drill.

Really lots of fun. we got second in state.  ::)

I do agree with the whole jock thing though xD. They refuse to believe that marching is harder than most sports, at least most sports i've played lol.

At our school, the football games are more about the band than the football team because our team sucks, so it's a pretty high honor to be in our band. One of my friends talked to a guy in a another band and it went something like this:

Other Guy:Hey, you might think this is gay, but I'm in the marching band.

My Friend: Nah, I don't think that's gay at all.

OG: Yeah but I wheel out the amps for the guitar players.

MF: Now that's gay.

Thanks. I thought it was something like that. I've noticed throughout the season that crowd pleasers are usually larger bands. The other band was like 215 people and our LHS Marching Rangers is a 110 musician drum corp band.

That's kinda weird of him to say. To my knowledge a "swing band" doesn't march on field or perform at football games. A swing band is another way to refer to a "Big Band". Oldschool stuff like Count Basie and Buddy Rich. When I was in marching bands we classified them into two rankings:
Drum Corp Style- more along the lines of High School DCI
Crowd Pleasers - These are bands that play more popular mainstream songs the crowd can actually recognize and participate in as far as cheering and sing alongs. Many of the traditional black college bands in the US fall into this category and are known for their dancing and showmanship.

Personally...I've always enjoyed performing the drum corp style myself.
