It's all about being consistent. A half hour practice routine each day is more benificial than 2 hours here and then 3 hours three days later and so on. Practice something every day!!

Emilde12,
That is a great observation! Im defintely guilty of the 2-3 hour sessions once a week and it can be frustrating to see how quickly coordination can degenerate (especially with age). Thinking about how much "muscle memory" is a factor in drumming, it makes so much sense that frequent repetition will yield better results than "cramming" all at once. This should have occurred to me before now-duh!. I will change my ways ;-) Thank you for the insight.. Bobby

i like to get in as much as poss, the result is a direct prejection of your time spent in this mode.

I usually practice about 2 or 3 hours on set then some more on pads after it's quiet time

Back in the day of student life and summer holidays I'd practice from four to six hours a day.
Today, with teaching, production and other stuff I get about that in a week. My goals have changed/evolved and therefore so has my routine.
Technically I'm nowhere near what I could do when I was shedding so much but musically I'm far more mature and gigs are much more enjoyable these days.
It really comes down to your goals at the end of the day. If you want to be a hired gun, session beast or clinician you need to get the hours in and be able to execute with great precision - no excuses. That would mean a period in your life where you are getting in 4 plus hours a day.
If you work full time and play weekends in a local function band then you should get in the amount of practice needed to play the gig well and have a blast without worrying about messing up. 1 hour a day or every second day would suffice as long as it's focussed and diligent effort.

OK, I'll come clean... I generally play-practice on weekends and its rare that play during the week at all. So if I play 2-3 hours a weekend without skipping a week, I actually feel good about that. However, I must admit, I regularly skip one weekend a month. I hope to get better organized so I can play a little more, but not that much more. I imagine this must sound pretty lethargic to you guys who are dedicated, but thats how much it takes to get my fix.

1-2 solid hours per day of me practicing for me. I have students and gig a lot so I get to play more. But at least an hour of practice with a goal of 2 hrs.

I'm obsessed with practicing recently. It's mainly because I started teaching late last year, and have a kit permanently set up at home now. Before that, I didn't practice much at all. I was kind of in a gigging rut,and playing in the same band for 10 years meant I didn't need to practice for that. Now I would say I do at least 5 hours with plenty of smoke breaks! That's just during the week though. At weekends I'm usually traveling around with the band, or my girlfriend is at home wanting me to do other stuff!

I stand by the gauge my mom used for me when I was a child and use when I give lessons.
- Play as long as YOU want. So if you want to play for 5 hours or 5 minutes, it is up to the individual. You can't force someone to practice for a set time limit (the image of the 1 hour piano lesson with the evil teacher over the shoulder comes to mind).

I'll agree with the statement that the amount you practice is reflected in your playing.
