For those who are practicing day and night but still feel unsure of their timing. This technique is really hepful because our minds and our ears can make us believe that we land on the click, when we are actually of by a bit!
Here is a different approach that I recently learned at the Atlanta Instiute of Music, by Tom Knight. He calls it playing upside down or displacement on the click. It is just as it sounds, there are different ways to do this. however I'm going to be discussing the 8th note displacement.
Ok, so you start by playing along with the click, for 4 bars or however long you want to, then you play 1 measure of 7/8, then immediately go back to 4/4. you will then be diplaced an 8th note behind the click. Being in this position allows you to really hear whether or not you are dragging or rushing. then to come out into the original click play 1 measure of 9/8. then try it with the measure of 9/8 first and coming out with 7/8. it helps to have your hi hat playing 8th notes. the hardest thing of this exercise is to feel the 1 after the measure of 7/8 or 9/8. when you're comfortable do fill while playing upside down on the click.
Hope this helps, it has cerainly helped me!

Or have your gtr player analyze your playing on Sonor by Cakewalk...He can see it if you are off even a scosh...... We use a click for everything we do in our band Imaginos! (I think over analyzing and complicating playing with a click makes it more difficult and intimidating) Without it we could not do the project. Practice playing with the click in lots of different time signatures and nailing the downbeat. If you are playing in 4/4...is it not impossible to be counting in 7/8? You have to switch to 7/8....is actually what you are saying is to count to seven in 4? Oh, no cause 8th is 2x as fast.....So, um.......This gave me a headache. I mean if you can't stay on the downbeat in 4; could you be good enough to play in 7?

8th notes rule for basic counting! I read it again.....I get it.... strait metronome, multiple time signatures which place the down beat in an anylytical spot.....I still have a headache LOL! Peace my drumming Brothers!

Goofing around in 5 has been helpful to me as it is a different feel than a 4 or 7..... 7 is close to the feel of 6.... 4 and 2; the same ..... 5 = Jazz...weird! I am more of a rock guy..lol.... but playing in a "5 feel" is so cool!
