MY drum workout ( input needed)

ZeAaron - Fri, 06/19/2009 - 13:25 | 6,707 views

okay, so for the next month or so, im minus a drumset, which leaves me with a pair of sticks and a practice pad. ive been devloping a chop busting workout to build myself up for my new kit and i need ur help! read what i gave thus far, and lemme know if i should add or take away stuff. thanks.

Single strokes
double strokes
triple strokes
quad strokes
groups of 8 singles on each hand
groups of 12 singles on each hand
groups of 16 singles on each hand

(repeat this twice, first about 16ths at 150 with just wrist and again at about 16ths at 200 using strictly fingers. at five minutes each) approx. time- 70 min

then i want to cover rudiments, but NOT all forty, i want to keep this workout at about two hours, a minute a rudiment isnt good enough.

what should i add, especially in the last 50 min section of Rudiment drumming and whatever else i need.

rudiments=lame... hybrid rudiments=awesome!!

It doesn't hurt to practice all "40" of your standard rudiments, but why waste your time when the first 16 are all your really need (if that) and then the rest can be fun time with hybrid rudiments like book reports, egg beaters, shirley murphs, and the death defying doctoral thesis (more bad ass version of book reports)

look'em up, and get on those! thats a work out!

MY WORKOUT INCLUDES A RUDIMENT, STYLE, RHYTHMIC SCALE, OSTINATO, POLYRHYTHM AND A CERTAIN RHYTHM ON A TWO WEEK BASIS. PLUS I HAVE FINALE 2009 AND I WRITE OUT EXERCISES AND SOLOS FOR MYSELF. AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE THIS FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS I WOULD PRACTICE STARTING WITH THE SINGLE STROKE ROLL, JAZZ INDEPENDENCE, TENS, AN EXAMPLE FOR AN OSTINATO WOULD BE EIGHTH NOTES ALTERNATING BETWEEN THE HH AND BASS DRUM WHILE SOLOING ON TOP AND VICE VERSA, THE POLYRHYTHM 2 OVER 3 BEING DISPLACED ALL OVER THE DRUMSET BOTH HANDS AND FEET AND FOR THE RHYTHM I WOULD PRACTICE ONE E A ---ALL OVER THE KIT BOTH HANDS AND FEET. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ME TO SEND YOU SOME EXAMPLES.

Practice regular, double, triple paradiddles. Para diddle diddle. Lead with the right. Lead with the left. Apply different accents on the different strokes. that stuff helps a ton.

Actually alot of times, I just find myself playing freelance, and just kinda playing whatever comes to mind. I felt some of my best playing and most of the tings I learned have come from that. Most of it just comes by accident, then I would go back and master whatever it was that I stumbled accross. Very rarely will I sit down and stress over learning something that someone told me i should learn. For me, I wanted to learn the basic rudiments cause I realized how important they are, after that, I just tried learning stuff I heard of just came accross by accident.

When I practice rudiments on my practice pad I like to try to introduce myself to applying them to the drum set. I like to move one hand to my leg and one on the pad and practice. Just to see if I can get a groove out of it. I love para diddle diddles and flams. I also keep a journal. Something basic just so I know I am always making progress.

so, new thing, ive taken out finger technique and added my feet for the singles, doubles and stuff. so now i need hybrid stuff between my hands AND feet. also, should i work on the flam excersises and apradiddles with my feet too?

this is gonna sound dumb, but inversed are just backwards right, like rrlr llrl?

you might think so but an inverted paradiddle is: rllrlrrl. Heres where to find it on this site: At the top of each page are different tabs. Select the "MEDIA" tab>select Drum Lessons>scroll down and click on the "Rudiments" section> look for the "inverted paradiddle" lesson by Paul Thompson. There are many good lesson here. check out several and choose what you want to work on.

Looks like a nice list of things to do, and I agree with don p, try doing some paradiddles and some inverted ones as well :]

That's a good workout! I would consider paradiddle variations, to start; standard and Inverted paradiddles. Check out the drum lessons for Paul Thompson inverted paradiddle lesson.

I forgot about adding a few different flam exercises. Some great examples in the site 'drum lessons' section.
