Paul Quin - Drummer / Music Attorney Interview

The music industry is made up of various players including individuals, companies, unions, not-for-profit organizations, rights collectives, and other associated bodies. Occasionally professional musicians negotiate their wages, contractual conditions, and other arrangements through Musicians' Unions or other guilds. But the industry also embodies an all too familiar "dark side" filled to the brim with legal pitfalls that the unwary musician can fall into. Issues ranging from contract disputes concerning royalties extending to losing any and all legal rights pertaining to the music they've worked so hard to create. These days without the proper representation one can find themselves in a situation which tends to exploit the talents and life's work of the artists involved. With so much on the line it would be unfortunate to lose it all due to an impetuous decision and a little bit of fine print. To give our members more clarity on this complex and sensitive matter Drummer Conn... more...

On May 5th, 2010, Damian King and Eric Rosebrock from DrummerConnection.com sit down with famed drummer JoJo Mayer for an interview at Seminole Music & Sound.   JoJo Mayer: Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer     From Wikipedia:   Jojo Mayer (born 18 January 1963) is a highly acclaimed Swiss drummer born in Zurich and currently residing in New York City. Son of a touring musician, Mayer began his career as a drummer at an early age, receiving his first drum set at the age of two. Having taught himself throughout his childhood, Mayer broke out into the professional music scene at the age of 18, joining the Monty Alexander group. Touring with the group would launch him into the major jazz music scene, playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux, Nice, and Athens etc, and leading to his gigs with jazz-greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone. Eventually, after playing with a great variety of artists, ... more...

JoJo Mayer intimated that he wants to teach and tell instead of "show" and I commend him for that. I have little respect for great drummers that only want to get something out of it in terms of dollars. I have never really spent any time listening to JoJo other than this interview but let me say this Billy Ashbaugh is a fantastic drummer and teacher. In my books he ranks with the best, yet he may not have the reputation but is serving the drumming community with excellence. Thanks for giving back, big time Billy and Drummer Connection. Fantastic!

What is your view about same sex marriage? Agree or not? Same sex marriage is only acknowledged in some states. While those partners may enjoy some tax benefits because of their union in their own states, they are denied them on a federal level. But strangely, the IRS's "second parent adoption credit" actually works in the favor of gay married partners. Aside from his extraordinary talent, Gavin seems so personable and down to earth in every interview Ive seen of him. He sets a great example for drummers in so many ways.

While there are so many truly great professional drummers, there are usually just a few that we pick as our favorites because of their particular style. Since most of my favorites are no longer active, Harrison, Sucherman, and Greb have become favorite new influences for me. And that entirely the result of "discovering" them through Drummer Connection. Thanks Guys !!

Ken Scott - Interview

by King on 01/25/2010 | 25,569 Views | 5 Comments
(0)

Ken Scott knows music. Having worked with some of the most iconic names in the industry it's hard imagining any fan of music in the past 40 years who hasn't heard a song he's produced. Now having been reunited with 5 of the original drummers from his illustrious career Ken has teamed up with Sonic Reality to release Epik Drums. Epik Drums is a virtual instrument/plug-in that provides an assortment of drum samples and audio grooves that will allow the engineer to practice the art of mixing real drums without wasting valuable studio time. Accompanying  Mr. Scott was Rod Morgenstein, a good friend and one of the featured musicians on Epik Drums. At the Winter NAMM show Ken and Rod sat down to talk with us about the creative process that went into this new recording software, and the direction they feel music is heading in today.

Yael - Interview

by King on 01/25/2010 | 16,110 Views | 3 Comments

In 2005 a collaboration of artists from around the globe set out to redefine the modern day recording process of how studio albums are created. By foregoing a more traditional approach Yael, accompanied with a cast of colorful and talented musicians decided to step "outside of the box" to see what happens when people just get together and start making music. The process developed into a whirlwind of innovative ideas encompassing a journey almost 4 years in the making…. The Love Project Journey. At the 2010 Winter NAMM Show I was fortunate enough to speak with Yael and Yury Anisonyan about this extraordinary album/documentary and how the whole creative process came into completion.

Bobby Figueroa - Interview

by King on 01/22/2010 | 25,361 Views | 1 Comments
(0)

Since the band was formed in 1961 the Beach Boys have become a staple of American music culture. The group has had thirty-six U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band) and fifty-six Hot 100 hits, including four number one singles. They have often been called "America's Band" and Allmusic.com has stated that "the band's unerring ability… made them America's first, best rock band." Although the lineups have changes throughout the years Bobby Figueroa commanded the drums from the mid-seventies until 1990. Now playing with Al Jardine and other artists, Bobby also stays involved in the local community by teaching music at several schools throughout the area Southern California. While at the Los Cabos Drumsticks booth Bobby was kind enough to speak with us about his upcoming album and why Los Cabos is his stick of choice.

Bo Swanger - Interview

NAMM is the ultimate shoppers paradise, just being able to see all the vendor booths is a challenge within itself. With just about every major manufacturer being represented, it's easy to get lost in the spectacle of NAMM with all this gear at your fingertips. Everybody has a specific feature and sales pitch for their product, but having the inside perspective always helps when determining your final purchase or endorsement with a company.Bo Swanger is and independent artist out of Denver, CO. This is our third NAMM show together after meeting two years ago in Nashville,TN. Since then he's been keeping busy performing with Darren Hotchstedler and other various side projects. While at the show this year we played catch up Bo as he was kind enough to give us a preview from two of his endorsement companies: Los Cabos Drumsticks, and Shine Custom Drums.

Stanton Moore - Interview

by billy ashbaugh on 01/12/2010 | 32,442 Views | 3 Comments
(0)

Stanton Moore has a love for New Orleans that runs deep down to the very core of who he is. Taken to his first Mardi Gras parade at just 8 months old, Stanton has spent his entire life becoming acquainted and immersed within the city's rich heritage and music culture - a history spanning across the many years and countless souls who've inhabited The Big Easy since it was founded in 1718. One of the original members and founder of the New Orleans-based funk band Galactic, Stanton and the gang have been hard at work in preparation for their eighth studio album Ya Kay May due out this February. While touring through Florida I had he chance to talk with Stanton about his new projects for 2010 and what progress has been made to rebuild his hometown since the devastation of hurricane Katrina.
