Unique Half Time Shuffles

I wanted to put together a few lesson/tutorial videos about some of my favorite grooves. Here are two of my all-time favorite grooves, which also happened to be unique forms of the classic half-time shuffle. First is Jason McGerr's half-time shuffle from "Grapevine Fires," followed by Darren King's chorus groove from the song, "You Are Mine."My Setup:Pearl Session Custom (12" 14" toms)22" KickBenny Greb Snare 13" x 5.75"Sabian HHX Evo 18" o zone crashHHX Evo 17" crash21" AAX Stage RideVintage Sabian Hand Hammered Dark Hats 14"

Topics included, tips on how to get more from your practice time with the click, ways to better lock with the click track, the importance of using the click track, as well as the benefits and downside. This one’s a bit long but worth the watch. Enjoy!

Billy,
Great lesson! Just diving back into playing and learning with a click. This was really informative. Can't wait to utilize your suggestions. Echoing another poster Bobby, you're a great teacher! Side note: took notice of your kick drum foot work and it seems like a really relaxed playing position. Gonna watch again & give it a try.
Thanks,
Steve

Thanks Billy! Learning to use the click for the first time has been challenging. The extra "clicks" and sounds in my ear are very distracting but your suggestions on how to practice have helped.

I still have the APX sign in my yard, I was told about 6 months ago it would be replaced with a Vivint sign. The sign is not that important to me it the customer service doing what they say they will do. I hope the service is better in an emergency.

Equalizing music is both a science and an art. There are no hard-and-fast rules, only general guidelines. Equalization can make music sound sweeter, harsher or boomier. Great equalization can make music better.

Billy Ashbaugh: Paradiddle Groove Workout #4

by billy ashbaugh on 11/13/2010 | 64,954 Views | 10 Comments
(3)

For today’s lesson we’re going to expand our rhythms for the kick drum in this groove setting. We’re still playing a steady flow of 16th notes phrased as Paradiddles with accents on beats 2 and 4.  The idea is to download the PDF file that has 12 one bar patterns to practice playing on the kick drum. These rhythms are getting busier so it’s also a great workout for your kick drum as well. Enjoy!

Nobody ever said that being a female was going to be cheap. There are a lot of items that all women like to use for their personal hygiene. With the varieties of shower gels, shampoos, deodorants, and other personal women's products, it's hard to choose the one that we are comfortable with. Also, it is important to find items that won't break our budget as well.

(2)

In today’s lesson we’re going to continue breaking up the rhythms between the kick and snare. Now, all quarter notes and last triplets only will be played on the snare and all first and last triplets will be played on the kick. Remember to concentrate on keeping a nice steady swing ride pattern with 2 and 4 on the hi-hat. Be sure to print the PDF download to get all 12 one bar patterns to practice. Enjoy!

Billy Ashbaugh: Hi-Hat Up Beat Grooves Part 2

by billy ashbaugh on 11/07/2010 | 15,866 Views | 10 Comments
(1)

In today’s lesson we’re going to get busier with the kick drum pattern. It’s time to introduce some 16th note rhythms on the kick drum. This is going to require some independence, so if this is new to you remember to slow everything down and go at your own pace. Don’t forget to download the PDF file for the kick drum patterns to workout with.

No, I have not done Part 3 yet. Remember, any 16th note notation you can find can be applied to this groove concept!
I use a notation software called Musedit.
Glad you like the lessons!!

Billy Ashbaugh: Basic 16th Note Grooves Pt 5

We’re adding two more patterns to workout with on the kick drum. These rhythms are getting funky! We’re also getting busier with our rhythms as well by introducing our first three note possibility. Remember to slow this stuff down and make sure everything feels good before you move on to another rhythm or speed up the groove. Make sure you print the PDF file to get all 12 one bar grooves.

Billy Ashbaugh: Beginner Fill Ideas Part 2

by billy ashbaugh on 10/31/2010 | 15,775 Views | 4 Comments
(2)

For Part 2, we’re going to add two new rhythmic figures to explore around the kit as fills. We’re still going to get use to these rhythms by practicing them on the snare drum only at first. Once comfortable, we’ll begin to move them around the kit. Remember to be creative and enjoy the journey!

Hey Billy,
I like how you stick the fills. Initially I learned to do alternate sticking, but to leave out whatever hand needed to rest. Great for keeping the timing correct, IMO.

But now, I had to reprogram myself (with urging of my drum instructor) to use strictly alternating hands for all the rhythms. It is/was a great exercise.

I really like that you are having so much fun presenting these lessons!

cheers, eddie

Hi Billy thank you so much for your lessons on the Fill ideas part 1 on 16 notes, you have shown me the correct way of playing these 16 note fills which i have taught myself played incorrectly before watching your lessons. Regarding to the Fill ideas part 2 where you have to omit the 1st note of every beat e.g. you play LRL (e & a), is there a way you use to help you time yourself to play your left hand on 'e' instead of on '1', '2', '3','4'? Thanks Billy

Billy Ashbaugh: Hi-Hat Up Beat Groove Idea #1

by billy ashbaugh on 10/30/2010 | 14,631 Views | 3 Comments
(3)

Today’s lesson will take a look at playing the & or up beat pattern on the hi-hat during a groove. For now the snare will continue to play a nice solid rim shot for beats 2 & 4. This can feel a little strange if it’s your first time trying this. We’re going to ease into this by only playing 8th note figures on the kick drum for now. Don’t forget to download the PDF file for 12 one bar grooves to practice. Enjoy!

Hey Billy

I am running out of superlatives to describe your lessons!

I will have to take this one slow...or maybe very slow.

I like the lead-in bit to the groove that you sometimes do:

I am guessing " & a on the snare and the crash on the one "?

cheers, eddie

Hey,
Maybe "lead ins" would be worthy of a lesson. Personally, I think they're tricky to count because no one is playing anything, and the music doesn't start on the "One". But, then again, I tend to over think it...
