Recently, I purchased that Mapex M-Birch (getting it on the 23rd) and I forgot they do not make studio rings for 8 inch toms, and I just happen to be one of the many drummers who HATE the ringy after tones of the drums. Is there any other way to control that ring?

Hello! Welcome to the site and Congrats on your new Mapex Kit! Please do upload some pictures, audio and video of it!

Try using Gaffer's Tape Product Description

or Moon Gel.

Tape works better, Moon Gel falls off to easily.. at least the crap I had (the pinkish looking stuff).

If you can't find either, some White Duct Tape can do the trick... I use it on my toms that you can see here: https://drummerconnection.com/category/drummer-tags/drummer-tags/drumfreak-jam-2008-11-26

We put some on the bottom heads as well, longer strips, especially on the floor toms that ring when you kick the kick drum.  I change my heads frequently and I'm not too worried about a little residue from the tape getting left behind from using Duct Tape. The Gaffer's tape has a better surface for controlling the sound though. Something about Duct Tape being shiny and reflective versus dull and "Gauzzy" feeling makes Gaffer Tape a little better choice for production and sound engineers.

Also, if you're doing some recording and use Logic or Pro Tools, you can try using a Noise Gate to taper off the ring and only allow the initial attack and a specified amount of tone to go through the microphone before the gate closes and the mic is silenced.

Enjoy!

Moongels are a good solution, just make sure you keep them clean and don't leave them in your car on a hot day Undecided

I second that, if you leave them in the car on a hot day it turns moongels in a moongel. haha But I like them, they work geat as long as you just rinse them out with hot water every now and then.

No, but I love the look of his studio hats. I think those are the ones who remind me of the k Custom Hybrids. Great value too!
